Věra Machoninová, Vladimír Machonin, Klaus Pätzmann · 1978 · Berlin
Stand across Wilhelmstraße to see the dark glass upper floors float over the base.
Věra and Vladimír Machonin designed the embassy of Czechoslovakia in East Berlin, built from 1974 to 1978 with Klaus Pätzmann. It stands on the corner of Wilhelmstraße in Mitte.
Dark glass bands sit above concrete in one of the most striking embassy buildings in the city. It has no heritage protection, and its renovation is under debate.
