Walk the terraced west side, then remember a motorway runs under your feet.
Locals call it the Schlange. The housing block runs 600 metres directly over the A104 motorway and rises to 15 storeys. The state housing company DEGEWO built it between 1973 and 1980 on land West Berlin had no other use for.
It remains the only complex that builds housing over a busy city motorway. Berlin listed the building and its gardens in December 2017. The motorway tunnel closed in 2023 over fire safety issues, with reopening planned for 2029.
