Klaus Kirsten · 1959 · Berlin
Look up at the corner tower on Gottschedstraße, where the concrete cubes cantilever out.
Klaus Kirsten built the administration building and assembly hall for the printing-press maker Rotaprint between 1957 and 1959. Budget cuts stopped the corner tower at five storeys, and the concrete stayed unplastered.
Guides call it accidental brutalism: the raw concrete came from a compromise. The buildings are listed, and the ExRotaprint project now runs them as space for artists, businesses and social groups.
